@ Luminus: I know where you are coming from. I myself have been playing EvE on and off over the years since its launch. Now I finally have the situation in which I can dedicate myself a bit more to the game than I used to before.
What gave me the most fun, personally, was banding with a group of newbies and exploring the game. These were different times though (right at launch of the game). Things were more tricky and learning took a whole lot longer at the beginning. So I never got to see a whole lot more than frigates, also because there were not that many different ships in the game as there are now.
We had a blast though. Mining together, ratting together, and exploring 0.0 in our newbie ships. I started flying around and having a peek all over the place at my second day of my character. Sure, I got podded at some point, but I had a blast.
Don't let the guides tell you what you can or cannot do. Sure, if you go to 0.0 right away, you will not stand a chance in combat, but you will have at least seen the place and have gotten a taste of it. Just make sure your clone is up to date and you assume you will get podded. Nothing can go wrong in that case.
Just be bold and do what you want to with the resources you've got. Want to haul goods but you cannot afford an Indy yet, just grab the frigate of your race with the biggest cargo and stick some cargo expanders on it and start hauling while you train for your Indy.
See, I restarted my current character, mainly making money with mining cause it is the ultimate casual thing to do in game (non working dad here, so get interrupted lots). My char is geared towards combat though. Do I get ****ty returns for refining? Yep. Do I care? Nope, as long as I'm enjoying myself and doing what I want to, a little less efficiency will definately not matter at all.
And about those learning skills: set them to train, and whenever you need a certain skill for whatever it is you want to do/use, just stick it all the way up there in the queue and have that train first. That way, you train what you need on the fly and you work on your learning skills at the same time. You really don't have to just train learning skills, that's the biggest BS I've heard.
Just go out and have fun mate, whatever it is you enjoy, go ahead and do it. Don't care too much about those guides until you really need one because you made up your mind about which career you want to go for in EvE. And then still, take it all with a grain of salt and do what feels good. This is a game, so it is supposed to be fun, not a chore.
Have fun!
